Proposal #45

Title: Building Your Online Classroom

Name: Gina Roberts

Aud_Level: All

Length: 120 minutes

Description: An ever increasing number of higher education institutions are delivering supplementary course materials, complete courses, and even entire curricula via the World Wide Web. These Web-based learning environments enable instructors to share interactive multimedia materials; deliver online testing; facilitate synchronous and asynchronous communication; and manage course assignments. Although each of these functions could be delivered using HTML and several individual software programs, a Course ManagementSystem (CMS) typically offers all these features in one integrated package.

Participants in this workshop will develop a sample online course using the BlackBoard CourseInfo Course Management System. CourseInfo's intuitive interface and full set of features make it an extremely useful tool for online course development.

Workshop Topics include:

Introduction to Online Courses
- An overview of online courses and course components
- An overview of course management systems

Creating Online Courses
- Mapping course content
- Integrating existing materials
- Creating and managing student accounts
- Testing and grading
- Communicating with students (synchronously and asynchronously)

Facilitating Online Courses
- Characteristics of online learners
- Training and support of faculty who deliver online courses
- Managing an online course server

Abstract: An ever increasing number of higher education institutions are delivering supplementary course materials, complete courses, and even entire curricula via the World Wide Web. This workshop is designed to give participants hands-on experience in developing their own online course using a Course Management System (CMS). Participants will use the BlackBoard CourseInfo CMS to develop a course that integrates multimedia materials; online testing; synchronous and asynchronous communication; and course assignments. Techniques for managing student accounts and facilitating online courses will be shared.
