Proposal #48

Title: Putting Your Best Foot Forward:  Building the Image of a Faculty Development Center on a Shoestring Budget

Name: Karen Jarrett Thoms, Ph.D.

Type of Session: Presentation

Preferred Track: #5-Faculty Development

Abstract: How do you set up a faculty development center on a shoestring budget?  How do you maintain the image of the center among faculty and administrators? What do you need to set up a center?  What's the politics involved?  What is the Advisory Committee's role with the center?

Description: Starting and maintaining a faculty development center is no easy challenge. It is time consuming, nerve-racking, painful, tedious, and very rewarding work!  Karen Thoms, who has worked in faculty development for many years, currently serves on the Advisory Committee for the Center for Teaching Excellence at SCSU.  She'll share her experiences (some rather defeating, others exhilarating) of establishing the faculty development center on her campus.  She'll discuss the institutional background and culture, the
history of faculty development at SCSU, the vision and mission of the Advisory Committee, selection of members, and program development-all on a shoestring budget.

Length: (60 minutes)

Audience: faculty development faculty/administrators

Audience level: all

On-site equipment requirements: Projection unit for computer-delivered presentation (Macintosh), Overhead projector
