Proposal #50

Title: Evaluating ITV Courses

Name: Karen Jarrett Thoms

Type of session: Presentation

Preferred track: Track 1: Alternative Course Delivery"

Abstract:
Evaluating ITV courses is often talked about as the missing link. What should be evaluated, should not be evaluated, must be evaluated? This ITV instructor provides examples of ITV evaluation forms used at her institution, the results of these evaluations, and suggestions for alternatives.

Description: Interactive Television (ITV) is but one format for distance education. It is a blessing to some, and headache to others. Although it is not the panacea for all problems in education, it can provide a means of increasing class size, exposing students to more diversity, expanding resources, and providing educational opportunities for course offerings. Just as with all teaching strategies and media/materials used in the classroom, the ITV should be evaluated. The evaluation needs to include three components: the course content, the instructor/instruction, and the technology. Frequently these three are blended, so that when technology fails, the course evaluation blends rather than separates the three. The presenter will share materials from her own classes as well as from other faculty at that institution.
