Proposal #52

Title: Developing Modules for Web-Based Bibliographic Instruction

Name: Mary Hricko

Aud_Level: Intermediate

Length: 60 minutes

Description: As more educators develop online courses for their instructional programs, librarians need to reassess the ways in which library services can be provided in an online format. A simple web page listing general information about the library is no longer suitable to address the needs of online researchers. library web sites must be interactive, more informative, and serve as filters to decipher information retrieved from the Internet. In short, librarians need to develop web sites which present online bibliographic instruction, instructional tutorials, and subject specific electronic resources that supplement the curriculum.

Skeptics may question the practicality of this proposal, but in reality, many libraries have already established web sites for this purpose. The challenge then is to find the ways and the means to transform one's library web page into a more useful instructional tool. To undertake such a project, librarians must collaborate not only with instructors, but also with the students who will be using the sites.

Abstract: This presentation will outline how librarians can develop modules for web-based instruction and offer examples of such sites. It will address issues to consider when establishing library services in an online format.
