Proposal #9

Title: The Virtual Field Trip Experience

Name: Connie Zimmer

Session Type: Lecture/Presentation

Track: Track 6: Looking Ahead

Abstract: The innovative uses of the Internet, multimedia programs, and research skills can be combined to establish virtual field trips to any corner of the world. The use of traditional library reference sources along with the electronic sources available today and tomorrow can be integrated into the curriculum at any grade level. Examples of student work, suggested Internet sources, and recommended electronic sources will be presented to those in attendance.

Description: The presenter participated in a week long immersion into an Electronic Learning Environment along with 10 other representatives from the public schools, universities, and educational service cooperatives in October of 1998. This experience was in conjunction with the Arkansas Leadership Academy and the Arkansas Educational Telecommunications Network.

Participants were encouraged to find creative educational ways of
integrating technology in to the curriculum. One outcome of this experience was the virtual field trip involving participation of all members of the team. Another outcome was a PowerPoint slide show which was actually a documentary on teacher preparation in instructional technology. This session will highlight the ingredients necessary for a successful virtual field trip experience and an example of such a field trip will be shown.
