"Libertarian" Jamal Hannah An important issue is the claim to the word "libertarian", which a section of the right-wing took up with the creation of the Libertarian Party in 1971. The first "official" use of the term by a capitalist/ rightist was by Dean Russell. He argued that "individualist" and "conservative" and "liberal" were not adequate labels for his brand of economic ideology, so he said, "Let [us] ...trademark and reserve for our own use the good and honorable word "libertarian." [This info is from the article "Who is a Libertarian?" by Dean Russell, in the May 1955 issue of "Ideas on Liberty", published by the "Foundation for Economic Education".] However, previous to this, the libertarian-left organization, "The Libertarian League", was founded on July 1954 by Russell Blackwell, Esther Dolgoff, and Sam Dolgoff. The organization had staunch anarcho-syndicalist principles and lasted until 1965. The organization was based in New York, and for a brief time Murray Bookchin was a member. While the pro-capitalist "Foundation for Economic Education" still exists today (as well as the Libertartian Party, started considerably later) there is yet another anarcho-syndicalist organization that used the name "Libertarian" in it- "The Libertarian Book Club". The idea of organizing a group for publishing and circulating anarchist liturature was broached by Gregory Maximoff shortly before he passed away in 1950. The club was formerly established by a number of comrades a few years later, amoung them Bill and Sarah Taback, Joseph and Hannah Spivack, Joseph Aaronstam, Ida Pilot (a professional translator) and her companion Valerio Isca, Esther Dolgoff and Sam Dolgoff. [This information is from the book "Fragments", by Sam Dolgoff, pub. by Refract Publications, Cambridge, 1986] It's worth mentioning that at least up till 2 years ago, the Libertarian Book Club was still in existance (and may still be). Also, the publication "Libertarian Labor Review" was begun in May of 1986 by Sam Dolgoff, Jon Bekken, Jeff Stein, Mike Hargis, Richard Christopher, and MiMi Rivera.
