Master of Science in Mathematics |
The Advanced Mathematics Track is recommended if you are interested in pursuing the PhD in mathematics. This track is designed specifically to prepare you for further study at the graduate level. The PhD is required for anyone wishing to pursue research in mathematics and is often required for teaching mathematics at the university level. |
(Master of Science in Mathematics) Before being admitted to the Master of Science program, you must complete at least 21 undergraduate credit hours in mathematics, including calculus. (It may be possible to make up some deficiencies in your first year of study.) To obtain a Master of Science degree at MTSU, you must complete a total of 36 credit hours in mathematics and/or related disciplines. At least 30 of these hours must be graduate-level, and at least 21 of these hours must be 600-level. All Masters' students, regardless of track, are required to take the nine-hour MASTER OF SCIENCE CORE. Also, all Masters' students must participate in at least one graduate seminar, give an oral presentation on an approved topic, and pass a comprehensive examination prior to graduation. |
(M.S. in Advanced Mathematics)
In addition, you must complete nine credit hours including thesis research (MATH 6640) along with six additional credit hours chosen with the approval of your advisor. A completed Masters' Thesis on an approved topic is required for this degree. |
