Master of Science in Mathematics |
The General Mathematics Track is recommended for anyone wishing a broad background in all aspects of theoretical mathematics. It is well suited for those who do not necessarily want to pursue research mathematics directly, but seek to pursue careers in mathematically oriented fields such as operations research, computer science, or biomedical research. |
(Master of Science in Mathematics) Before being admitted to the Master of Science program, you must complete at least 21 undergraduate credit hours in mathematics, including calculus. (It may be possible to make up some deficiencies in your first year of study.) To obtain a Master of Science degree at MTSU, you must complete a total of 36 credit hours in mathematics and/or related disciplines. At least 30 of these hours must be graduate-level, and at least 21 of these hours must be 600-level. All Masters' students, regardless of track, are required to take the nine-hour MASTER OF SCIENCE CORE. Also, all Masters' students must participate in at least one graduate seminar, give an oral presentation on an approved topic, and pass a comprehensive examination prior to graduation. |
(M.S. in General Mathematics)
To ensure a broad mathematical experience, we require that at least half of these hours come from three different areas. The remaining nine of your 36 hours are selected by you and your advisor to meet your particular needs and interests. You have the option of writing a Masters' Thesis to substitute for up to six of these last nine hours. |
