DESCRIPTIONS
All
courses listed may be used to fullfill the General Mathematics Track
requirements.
| MATH 531 |
Numerical Analysis I. Three credits. Prerequisite is CSCI 318 or its
equivalent. Applications of computer-oriented numerical algorithms to algebraic
equations, differential equations, and linear algebra. Rigorous treatment
of approximation error is included. |
| MATH 532 |
Numerical Analysis II. Three credits. Prerequisite is CSCI 318 or MATH
531. This course continues the study of topics introduced in MATH 531.
|
| MATH 626 |
Adv. Differential Equations I. Three credits. Prerequisite is MATH 323
and MATH 425. This course provides an in-depth study of systems of differential
equations, gradient systemts Sturm-Liouville problems, as well as elementary
techniques for solving partial differential equations with boundary value
conditions. |
| MATH 627 |
Adv.
Differential Equations II. Three credits. Prerequisite is MATH 626. This
course provides the student with an in-depth study of boundary value problems
in partial differential equations, including the heat, wave, and potential
equations. Techniques studied include characteristics, series solutions,
Green's functions, and integral transforms. |
| MATH 630 |
Optimization. Three credits. Prerequisite is MATH 532 or instructor
consent. This course provides a study of constrained and unconstrained
optimization problems, including eigenvalue and generalized least-squares
problems. Techniques used include orthogonalization, conjugate gradient,
and quasi-Newton algorithms. |
| MATH 631 |
Control Theory. Three credits. Prerequisite is MATH 626 or instructor
consent. This course provides a study of observability, controllability,
and system stabilization, as well as Lyaponov methods, otpimal control, the
calculus of variations, and vector space applications to system analysis.
