Information for Database and Merge Exercise

Susan Jones, Test Scores 78, 87, 85, 84 Report 84, Unit Grade 92

Fred Jones, Test Scores 81, 84, 78, 76 Report 87, Unit Grade 89

Sam Walton, Test Scores 89, 78, 88, 92 Report 86, Unit Grade 78

Sheila Smith, Test Scores 80, 74, 72, 84 Report 80, Unit Grade 83

Rodney James, Test Scores 78, 84, 74, 92 Report 78, Unit Grade 80

Our semester grade is based on 40% for the test average, 30% for the report, and 30% for the Unit Grade.  We need to make fields for all the above data and the semester grade.  How much information is there?  What extra information would we like to know?  You can personalize the grades to meet your subject area if you wish.  You may also want to color code each area.

You have also given a pre-test and post-test for the unit you have taught.  We need to find the improvement, if any, by percentage and graph the results.  The scores for Unit 6 pre and post test are:

Susan Jones – 76, 83

Fred Jones – 84, 81

Sam Walton – 87, 89

Sheila Smith – 85, 88

Rodney James – 75, 73

Obviously the first score is the pre-test and the last is the post-test.

After we have done this we want to send students a progress report.  To do this we will merge the spreadsheet file and the word processing file.  You create the report in WORD and then merge it with the spreadsheet.

You are a teacher and need to write a letter to each parent in your class.  You need to make the letter personal b including the student’s name.  Tell the parent(s) about the PTA meeting coming up and that they are invited to your room to view a PowerPoint presentation & conference with you.  To do this you will need to create a database that contains all of your student’s information.

In Excel construct a database with the following columns starting in A1 & proceeding to the right.  When you finish save the file as grade example.

You will want to view the PowerPoint on the syllabus page before you get too far along in this exercise.  The link is: Merging Word and Excel to create a report
