Ray Wong

Ray Wong, professor of visual communication, teaches publication design, computer design and other graphics courses. He hold degrees from Arizona State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia. Prior to joining the MTSU faculty in 1995, he worked as systems editor and graphics editor at the Nashville Tennessean for 13 years; as graphics editor and director of photography for The Clarion-Ledger/Jackson Daily News in Jackson, Miss.; as picture editor at the Toronto Star; and as a photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer.

During Prof. Wong's tenure at The Tennessean, he coordinated the newspaper's redesign. Previously, he redesigned newspapers in Jackson and other Mississippi cities. He has also been an adjunct faculty member at Belmont University and Cumberland University. In 1989, Mr. Wong was a Gannett Fellow in Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. He was a recipient of a Robert F. Kennedy Award and the Champion International Inc. Award for his contribution to "North Mississippi Justice," a study of jail conditions in Northern Mississippi, and he has also won awards in the National Press Photographers Pictures of the Year Competition.

 

Dr. Sanjay Asthana

Sanjay Asthana, associate professor of visual communication, earned his Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2003 from the University of Minnesota. He also holds an M.Phil. in Philosophy, and a Master’s in Communication from the University of Hyderabad, India. Dr. Asthana teaches courses in media design, visual communication, globalization, communication technologies and cultural studies. He worked as a radio broadcaster at the All India Radio in India, where he scripted and produced current affairs programs and numerous documentaries on social and political themes.

Dr. Asthana’s major research areas include globalization and media, visual communications, postcolonial theory and cultural studies. His research appeared in the Journal of Communication Inquiry, Critical Studies in Media Communication, among other journals, and essays in several media studies books. Dr. Asthana is the author of the book Innovative Practices of Youth Participation in Media, published by UNESCO in Paris in 2006.

Randy Livingston

Randy Livingston, assistant professor of visual communication, teaches basic media design and computer design. He holds degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Georgia. Randy has experience in teaching art, art history, drawing, graphic design, Web design, color theory, and other courses at The University of Georgia, Dynamic Graphics Educational Foundation, and Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Phil Loubere

Phil Loubere, assistant professor of visual communication, teaches Media Design Applications and Basic Media Design. Prior to joining the School of Journalism faculty, he worked as a news artist at three West Coast newspapers—The Seattle Times, the San Jose Mercury News and The Orange County Register—over a period of 12 years from 1996 to 2008. Before that, he taught art and design classes at Pierce College and the University of Puget Sound, both in Tacoma, Wash. Prof. Loubere has an M.F.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, an M.A. from Eastern Illinois University, and a B.F.A. from SUNY College at Buffalo, N.Y. Website: grrbear.com
