I've also seen the "hold ball" position described as "old man" - ie one hand is holding a pipe, the other is resting on a walking stick. This imagery also includes the body shape - ie rounded back, relaxed chest, dropped shoulders.
From this position you can go into a whole array of defensive and offensive movements - eg the top hand can brush aside a punch whilst the lower attacks to the lower torso, or the lower arm can peng block while the upper hand strikes to the neck, etc, etc
