The Bengal Tiger (panthera tigris tigris): one of nature's most feared predators

  1. Where Bengal Tigers Live: Bengal tigers live in the largest numbers in the Sundarbans regions of India and Bangladesh, but are also found in central and northern India, as well as in Nepal and Burma. Some, of course, live in zoo's and circuses throughout the world.

  2. How Many Bengal Tigers are there: Around the year 1900, there were as many as 50,000 (fifty thousand!) tigers in India. But by the year 1972, there were only about 1,800 (one thousand eight hundred) Bengal tigers left. Through an attempt to conserve the existence of the tiger, there are currently about 4,000 (four thousand) tigers remaining.

  3. Sizes: The male Bengal tiger can get up to ten feet long, from the end of its tail to its head, with a shoulder width of up to 3 feet, and can way up to 575 pounds. That's as much as three big men. Though it's quite large, the Bengal tiger is not the largest tiger. Its cousin, the Siberian tiger, is the world's largest cat.

  4. What do Bengal Tigers Eat? Tigers are carnivores. They primarily eat animals like wild boars, monkeys, buffalo, wild oxen, and chital (a type of deer).

Bengal tigers are nocturnal. The Bengal tiger is very fast, but only for short distances. When they want to eat animals that are faster than they are, the tiger stalks its prey The Bengal tiger, once it has caught its prey, bites its catch on the back of the neck to kill it, or. with larger animals, the tiger will bite its prey's throat. Though the Bengal tiger is capable of killing large animals, it seems to prefer killing either young, small animals or older animals, since young and old animals are not as fast as the others.

  5. Miscellany: When a Bengal tiger roars, you can hear it almost two (2) miles away. And, like the kitty in your house, tigers purr, either when they feel good, or sometimes when they are in pain. Moreover, tigers have just about the same lifespan (that means how long they live) as your house cat, which is about fifteen (15) years.
