Scholar's BookLink: Art provides links to online book reviews, sample chapters and images, etc. for several titles, some of which are held at the library.
Bibliographies are used by researchers to
quickly determine which books, journal articles, and other documents have
been published about a certain topic.
Art Index (Periodicals Index Shelves) The major index in the field covers about 200 periodicals and museum bulletins.
The Getty Art History Information Program (AHIP) includes the International Repertory of the Literature of Art (1975-89) and the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (1977-92), among other databases.
The ERIC database
includes citations to journal articles, conference proceedings, reports,
etc. in the field of education. Art teachers at all levels should find
valuable references here.

Dictionary of Art (R703 D561 1996)
Thirty-four volume set covers everything from "Aachen" (Germany) to
"Zygouries," site of a Bronze Age town in southern Greece.
Volume 34 is a detailed index.
Encyclopedia of World Art (R703 En1a) This 15-volume set covers the art and architecture of all peoples and periods. Each article concludes with a list of books and journals to consult for further study. Volume 15 provides a detailed index. Each volume contains about 500 plates.
McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Art (R703 M17d) This five-volume set is well written, attractively illustrated, and truly international in coverage.
Thames and Hudson Dictionary of Art Terms (R703 L96t)
Who's Who in American Art (R927.7 W62) Factual information about artists, art historians, art critics, art editors, museum personnel, and art educators, in the U.S. and Canada. Geographic and professional classifications indexes are provided.
International Dictionary of Art and Artists (R700 In85 1990) Volume I, "Art," discusses about 500 individual works of art, and is arranged in chronological order. Volume II, "Artists," includes brief biographical information, a list of important public and private collections of the artist's works, a bibliography, and a critical essay of the artists works.
World Artists, 1950-1980 (R709.22 M34w) Contains biographies of 312 artists who worked during this 30-year period. Each entry includes a career outline, a lists of exhibitions and collections, and a bibliography.
World Artists, 1980-1990 (R709.22 M34w 1980-1990) Over 100 artists influential in the 1980s are profiled. Each entry includes a fairly substantial biographical sketch, lists of exhibition and gallery/museum collections lists, and a bibliography.
Dictionary of Women Artists: An International Dictionary of Women Artists Born Before 1900 (R709.22 P45d) Each of the 21,000 entries includes brief biographical information, a list of exhibitions, and bibliographical references (if applicable).
A Biographical Dictionary of Women Artists in Europe and America Since 1850 (R709.22 D91b) Biographical sketches of 750 artists are supplemented by bibliographies and lists of institutions that hold the artists' works.
Contemporary Artists (R927 C76 1989) Biographical information, list of exhibitions and collections, a bibliography, and a critical summary are provided for 850 artists. The best reference work for information about artists still living after 1960.
Dictionary of Contemporary American Artists (R709.22 C91d 1988)
Each
of the 900 entries provides biographical facts (education, exhibitions,
awards) and a bibliography.
The MTSU Art Department has information about its program and faculty.
ArtSource provides links to a growing list of other web pages maintained by Art & Architecture Departments.
Directory of Art and Design Faculties in Colleges and
Universities, U.S. and Canada R378.12 D62 1994-95
Includes the following information for over 1500 art and design
departments: address, office telephone, fax number, and email address, if
available, and an alphabetical listing of faculty. An "Index by
Area of Teaching Interest" is one of several helpful indexes that are
provided.
Supplement the information found in the directories below with the growing number of Internet resources. Many museums, such as the National Museum of American Art, are using the Internet to increase access to their priceless collections. Markus Kruse maintains a large collection of links to art museum sites.
American Art Directory (R705.8 Am3d) This directory provides brief, factual information about museums, foundations, organizations, college art departments, and art schools. Subject and personnel indexes are included.
Official Museum Directory (R069.025 Of1m) Brief, factual information on more than 7000 museums in the U.S. is provided in this directory.
Art Museums of the World (R708 Ar75) This is not a directory, but a collection of historical essays about 200 of the most important art museums of the world. Each essay includes a selective bibliography, and a detailed bibliography of museum literature appears in the back of volume two.
Art Museums of America (R708.13 Sh5a) Although published in
1980,
this guide to 500 museum collections in the United States and Canada is
still valuable. Organized by state.
The Directory of Scholarly Electronic Conferences includes basic information about listservs, news groups, etc. in many fields, including Art, Architecture, and Urban Design.
The Scholarly Societies Project [Univ. of Waterloo Library] provides links to Internet sites maintained by societies and associations in many fields, including The Fine Arts.
Encyclopedia of Associations R061 G13e
This reference book provides brief, factual information on more than 22,000
national and international
associations, societies, and other organizations in all fields, including
art. Use the Name and Keyword Index in Part 3 to determine the
entry number for a specific association.
Although there is presently not a central index one can use to locate specific works of art on the Internet, sites such as the Famous Paintings Exhibition offer access to some of the more popular works; ArtServe's art & architectural history collection has grown to over 10,000 images.
The standard reference works listed below remain invaluable when one is looking for a specific work of art.
