NetLibrary is a collection of online books (eBooks). MTSU Library has
subscribed to a portion of the collection which currently contains 10,690
titles from 156 publishers and covers all subject areas. 54% of the
titles are from university presses with special effort being given to
include all publications from universities in the southeastern United
States. 38% of the collection is made up of 1998-2000 titles. 400 CHOICE
Magazine Outstanding Academic Titles are currently included with more
added as they become available. The collection is especially strong in
literature, business, history, health/medicine, sociology, and religion
as well as science, technology, and computer science titles. It also
contains many public domain eBooks from such sources as "Project
Gutenberg" which have been enhanced and integrated into the collection for
better online searching and reading.
An eBook is an electronic version of a printed book. eBooks can be viewed
online from any computer connected to the Internet. You can preview
netLibrary eBooks for 15 minutes for quick reference, or read them at your
leisure. Because eBooks are online, they are available 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. They are automatically returned at the end of the
2-hour checkout time.
There are two ways to access eBooks at netLibrary. If you are accessing
the database from an authenticated PC on the MTSU campus or through the
library proxy server from home (by entering your username and password),
you can search or preview eBooks as an anonymous user with no additional
login required. To check out eBooks, you must first create a user
account. Once created, you can use your user account to log in from any
computer with Internet access.
To create a netLibrary account:
1. Click Create an Account
2. Enter your identifying information, including username and e-mail
address.
3. Click Submit. Creating a new account automatically logs you
into netLibrary.
To check out a eBook, you must first log in using the account you created
for yourself.
1. Click the Log In button on the main navigation bar.
2. Enter the username and password you used when you created your
account.
3. Click Log In. You are now logged in to netLibrary and will have access
to all of the eBooks in the MTSU Library collection.
The search box on the main navigation bar performs a quick search,
allowing you to locate an eBook by searching full text, keyword, title,
author, or subject. To perform a Quick Search:
1. Select an option from the dropdown list on the main navigation bar,
either full text, keyword, title, author, or subject.
2. Enter search term(s).
Note: To do an exact phrase search, enclose the phrase in double
quotes.
3. Click Go. netLibrary will display the search results.
The main search screen allows you to search multiple fields
simultaneously, including title, author, subject, keywords, full text,
publisher, publication, year, and ISBN. The more information you enter,
the more precise the results of your search will be. To find an eBook:
1. Enter the search text.
Text entered in the Full Text field searches the full text of all
eBooks.
Text entered in all other fields will search the bibliographic
records.
For an exact phrase search, enclose the phrase in double quotes.
2. Select the collections you want to search. (Note that the Private
Collection is not available to MTSU.)
3. Click Search. netLibrary displays the search results.
You may preview an eBook for 15 minutes without logging in to
netLibrary. You will be allowed an additional 15 minutes as long as
another library member has not requested the eBook. To preview an eBook:
1. Locate the eBook you want to view.
2. Click the eBook title to display the eBook Information page.
3. Click the Preview icon. netLibrary displays the eBook.
To check out an eBook, you must be logged in to netLibrary. Once you have
checked out an eBook, you have exclusive access to it for the checkout
period of 2 hours. The eBook is automatically checked in when the time
expires. A status window will display the title of the eBook and the time
remaining before it is automatically returned to netLibrary. To check out an eBook:
1. Locate the eBook you want to check out.
2. Click the eBook title to display the eBook Information page.
3. Click the Checkout icon. netLibrary displays the checkout time with an
option to view.
eBook Reader is a free software program which allows netLibrary users to
download eBooks onto their computer and view them without an Internet
connection, annotate text with highlights, notes and bookmarks, and create
bibliographic entries using MLA format. It may be downloaded directly
from the netLibrary opening screen. eBook Reader needs to be
downloaded on to your computer only once. Be sure to read the
system requirements and download time before attempting to download the
software. (Note that eBook Reader is NOT available on the computers
in the Library.)
The netLibrary eBook Reader protects the copyright of the publisher by
placing copyright warnings on copy and print, limiting the amount of text
which may be copied or printed at one time, and prohibiting attempts to
download an eBook to another computer or to reset the computer system
clock in order to extend checkout time, etc.
Once eBook Reader is downloaded to your computer one time, you may
download books from netLibrary to be read off-line.
To use eBook Reader
1. Locate the eBook you want to download from the netLibrary.
2. Follow the on-screen prompts to download the eBook. You may be
prompted to enter your netLibrary username and password.
3. Once a title is downloaded, it remains on your computer until you
delete it or the checkout period expires. Once the checkout period
expires, you must check out the eBook again in order to continue viewing
it.
You may print parts of an eBook, but you may be limited to about
one page at a time for copyright protection purposes. Highlight the text
you want to print, select FILE>PRINT and click OK.
You may make margin notes by selecting TOOLS>NOTES, or clicking the
Create Note button on the toolbar. Enter a note in the popupwindow, close
the window, and a note symbol appears in the left margin of the
text. Click a margin note to read its contents. To delete a note, click
anywhere in the paragraph with the note and click the Delete Note button
on the toolbar.
You may add bookmarks in an eBook to help you keep your place and
return to that location. Position your cursor in the document at the
place you want to bookmark AND select TOOLS>BOOKMARKS or click the
Add/view Bookmark button on the toolbar. To return to a specific
bookmark, select TOOLS>BOOKMARKS, select the appropriate bookmark, and
click GO TO.
