Scholarly Research

Periodical Locations and Abbreviations | Indexes to Periodical Literature | Current Journal List

Periodical Locations and Abbreviations

Periodicals are located on the first floor of the MTSU Library Building, and are shelved in alphabetical order by title. Check for exact holding information in Voyager.

Older magazines and newspapers are often preserved on microfilm reels (MFM) or microfiche cards (MFE). Back issues not on microtext are sent to the bindery. One bound group may contain several issues. These bound volumes have the location code "Periodicals." Recent, unbound issues will have the location code "Current Periodicals."

If you see the note "BINDERY" on the Voyager catalog record for the journal issue you need, check with the periodicals help desk. They may be able to tell you when the issue will come back. The periodicals desk staff can also help direct you to the correct stack area, as well as direct you to the microtext division.

Periodicals Listing

The following is a list of current journals and magazines that have "music" as a Library of Congress Subject Heading. The journal title is followed by the year and first issue number that MTSU Library received. Remember that there are historical collections of music journals held by the library. This list is only as current as the last update, so check Voyager for the most recent holdings information.

About Music Research

Getting Started
Guides | Campus Libraries

Guides

If music is your major, or if you intend to do graduate level research in music (theory, musicology, etc), it is important to have access to a good guide to research. Your music instructor may recommend something, or you may wish to read one on the following annotated list:

Research Guides

  • Wingell, Richard J.
Writing about Music: An Introductory Guide.
Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1990.
    MAIN COLLECTION 780.72 W72w

This first entry is actually a writing guide, although it does contain some advice for conducting research. This title is included because it is important for students to learn the styles of scholarly writing with their field of interest. This guide helps students to write specialized papers, such as seminar presentations and program notes.

  • Crabtree, Phillip D. and Donald H. Foster.
    Sourcebook for Research in Music.
Bloomington & Indianapolis: Indiana University Press, c1993.
    REFERENCE 780.016 C84s

This a very readable and useful introduction to music research. The work is not as comprehensive as Duckels', but it is well-suited for the target audience of students new to graduate-level research. Undergraduate students will appreciate the glossary of bibliographic and research terms. The work also includes a glossary of German and French terms.

  • Duckels, Vincent H. and Michael A. Keller.
Music Reference and Research Materials: An Annotated Bibliography. 5th ed.
New York: Schirmer Books ; London: Collier Macmillan, 1988.
    REFERENCE 780.01 D85m 1997

For many music instructors, this book is the definitive bibliography. This work manages to be comprehensive and scholary, while remaining accessible for the casual reader.

  • Pruett, James W. and Thomas P. Slavens.
    Research Guide to Musicology.
Sources of Information in the Humanities. 4. Chicago: American Library Association, 1985.

This guide is targeted to librarians and library school students who will need to assist researchers, but do not have a background in music. The tone of the writing is scholarly and a bit dry. This may discourage browsers and students who are just beginning their study of music. However, the book can help the reader to better understand historiography and musicology.

A useful research skill is the ability to read a music call number, so one can retrieve materials and take advantage of browsing to find information. The MTSU library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC or "Dewey") system to catalog books about music. This is not typical of most music-only library collections. The Center for Popular Music (CPM) and the MTSU Music Library are both cataloged using the Library of Congress Classification System (LC). The University of Tennessee at Knoxville provides a good web introduction to LC in music classification. Take a look.

MTSU Campus-area Libraries

There are several resources for research on the MTSU campus.

  • The Center for Popular Music (CPM)
The Center for Popular Music is a research facility and archive. CPM items do not circulate, and use is limited to a reading room. CPM staff will make photocopies or duplicate recordings (as copyright allows) for a fee. CPM does have a strong reference and monograph (book or authored text) collection, but its main strengths are scores, papers and recordings. MTSU is the host for the Center, which is a Tennessee Center for Excellence under the Board of Regents system.

  • Central Library
As the MTSU University Library, this is the most convenient place to do general music research for class papers. There are many resources on music in the Main Collection (which circulates) and in the Reference Collection (which does not circulate).

  • The Philip Howard Music Library
The Department of Music owns and maintains a small music library, in the Wright Music Builing. Some of the holdings, mostly scores, are in the PALS system. The library is classified using the LC classification system. Those wishing to use the library should check with the MTSU Music Department for details and usage rules.

  • Mc Wherter Learning Resource Center (LRC)
The LRC is the primary site for audio-visual resources on the MTSU campus. Performance videos and recordings may be played at the LRC. If you want to get a video to present in class, be sure to talk to your instructor well in advance. Most items can only be checked out by faculty, and they assume responsibility.
