History

If the word elegance is defined as “simple yet powerful,” then a small yet determined group of young ladies at Middle Tennessee State University certainly epitomizes elegance. With as much impact the sisters of Lambda Theta Alpha have made on their community, one would never guess that it all began with only five founding sisters.

The founding sisters would have never commenced if they did not have such powerful roots. In Fall 2003 a few ladies expressed interest in establishing a chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha on Middle Tennessee State University’s campus. With the assistance of a transfer sister, Caroline Bizot, from Gamma Gamma Chapter in University of Tennessee, Knoxville, these ladies soon became part of the Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated. Unfortunately, a few of the interests graduated or transferred, causing uncertainty for the interest group’s future.

When Fall 2004 arrived, several fresh faces including future founding sisters Cristol Camacho, and Luisa Padro as well as some old interests revitalized the interest group, driving the interests towards an ambitious, bright future. Maryin Chavez and Sheila Umayam joined the interest group in 2005, and Tatiana Steven joined in 2006. The new generation of motivated interests took MTSU’s campus by storm with their innovative events such as the talent showcases the Apollo and Amor, Paz y Mas. Furthermore, the interests compassionately immersed themselves in a wide range of community service projects such as mentoring ESL (English as a Second Language) middle school students and school-aged children at the Boys and Girls Club, participating at events at the Discovery Science Center, collecting items for hurricane and tsunami relief efforts, and holding a Carnival For Kids, which raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospitsl.

The interests demonstrated their diversity by hosting several educational forums such as a Discrimination Forum, a Modern Day Slavery Forum, and an Interracial Dating Forum. In addition, the interests volunteered their time at the local Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Gala and even raised money for a Hispanic Education Fund, thus truly showing that they reached out to the community. Due to their striving efforts, the Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated won awards even just as interest group: Organization of the Year at the Ebony Achievement Awards and Most Spirited at the Up ‘Til Dawn philanthropy event. In addition, they also received two campus-wide Student Organization Awards: Exemplary Organization award and the Diversity Programming award. Two of the interests and future founding sisters, Cristol Camacho and Maryin Chavez, received Exemplary Leader awards, and Chavez also won the Unsung Hero award.

After three years of ceaseless determination, the interest group finally was given their well-deserved chance to found a chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha on their campus.. The five unwavering, strong-minded ladies established the long-awaited Delta Iota chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated. The founding sisters were Sheila Umayam, Maryin Chavez, Cristol Camacho, Tatiana Steven, and Luisa Padro. After the chapter was established, the sisterhood continued to exceed their previous accomplishments year after year. Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated, Delta Iota Chapter unquestionably embodied the principles of unity, love, and respect.

At the beginning of the Fall Semester 2006, Delta Iota Chapter was already being recognized. The NPHC opened their arms and welcomed the new sorority to campus. Lambda That Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. at MTSU accomplished something many organizations strive to achieve; acceptance. They worked with other organizations like Alpha Kappa Alpha in their annual AKAdemics Forum, Delta Sigma Theta in their annual Divas Diversity Forum, Omega Psi Phi for reading to Bradley Elementary students, Alpha Phi Alpha in collecting books for New Orleans libraries, June Anderson Center in collecting hygiene products for the Domestic Violence Center, and PRSSA, the Future Society and the Cotton Company in collecting jeans for insulation for Louisiana schools.

One thing Delta Iota chapter became recognized for was their F.U.T.U.R.O program with ESL students from the surrounding area. The program began with the interest group, but as the chapter continued to make a name for itself the F.U.T.U.R.O program was established, making Delta Iota the first chapter in its area to have this program.

The few yet highly influential sisters consequently became role models on their campus and truly defined what is to be an elegant Lambda Lady. The five founding sisters were known on campus as well as nationwide as “Las Bellas Poderosas” from the “Dignified and Inspiring” Delta Iota Chapter. Lambda Theta Alpha's seed was planted in the Fall 2003 interest group, grew its roots in the interest group, and ultimately blossomed into the powerful sisterhood known today as Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated Delta Iota Chapter.
