The Pacific Border province extends along the Pacific coast from Canada to southern California.  The province is bordered along most of its eastern side by the Cascades and the Sierra Nevada provinces; on the southeast it touches the Basin and Range province, and on the south it is bordered by the Lower California province.  The Pacific Ocean forms the entire western side.  The continental shelf, which is relatively narrow compared with that on the eastern side of the country, in places only 1 mile wide, may also be considered a part of the Pacific Border province.  A very small portion of southwestern California is not part of the Pacific Border province, but is instead in the Lower California province and will be briefly discussed at the end of this chapter.
