The
club is located in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and is open to all members
of Middle Tennessee
State University's Campus
Recreation Center age 18 or over.
MTMS
is governed by United
States Masters Swimming (USMS), an "organization of over
38,000 men and women from age 18 to 100." (That's more people
than the entire US Coast Guard.)
You
don't have to be an elitist swimmer (yet). You don't have to compete.
You don't have to wear the tiny competition suit we're going to
give you. And you don't even have to show up for practice.
You
do need to fall somewhere between "dog-paddler" and "Lenny
Krayzelburg / Amy Van Dyken." And you do need to love swimming.
Practice times vary
by semester, but they usually last an hour and consist of about
2100 yards (warm-up, drills, sprints, main sets, cool down). There's no requirement to make it through
the entire workout. If you do complete the entire workout, you are
required to be breathing.
MTMS
participates in various United States Masters Swimming meets
each year; locations include Georgia Tech, Auburn University, Western Kentucky University, the University of Lousiville, and here at the Campus
Recreation Center.
Members
can also submit workouts in the "Swim
Across Tennessee" (SAT) program, which charts your progress from Memphis to the Tri-Cities. Each 100-mile mark
gets you a SAT t-shirt. Make it all the way across, and you'll have
to swim back.
Membership
costs $65 and gets you the following:
How
to join:
- Bring a $65 check (made payable to MTSU Masters Swim Club) to the Campus Recreation
Center offices. Contact
Pam Footit (898-2255) to arrange pick-up of your suit, goggles
and swim cap.
