Notes From the Center

Going to the woods is going home - John Muir

This month we’re proud to introduce the Center's new Four Season Virtual Tree Trail.

Over the past year the MTSU Center for Environmental Education’s own Bob English has been taking pictures and recording the sights and sounds that you might experience on the paved trail at the Wilderness Station, the nature center at Barfield Park in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  Stations along with trail show featured trees in context, and provide the opportunity to stop and look around at each station and learn to use leaves, twigs, bark, flowers, and fruits to identify each tree.

Made possible with a Special Projects Grant from the MTSU Foundation, the Virtual Tree Trail is a tool for teaching about trees, important traits used in tree identification, and the use of dichotomous keys.  A unique feature is the interactive key featuring an illustrated glossary, hyperlinked to descriptive terms in the text and key.

We hope the Virtual Tree Trail encourages everyone to actually visit Barfield Park and experience the beauty of this park for themselves.  Click on the Virtual Tree Trail logo below to begin your virtual tour.
