Socrates Garcia
Adjunct Professor, Commercial Music Ensemble
An accomplished composer, arranger, producer, guitarist, and educator from Dominican Republic. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theory and Composition from Luther College and a Master’s degree in Jazz Composition from Middle Tennessee State University.
In 1995, he enrolled in the world-renowned Dick Grove’s Composing and Arranging Program (CAP), under the direct tutelage of Mr. Grove, who stated “Socrates is one of the topmost students I have had in the program, and I’ve had around 1,200.” He also took private composition lessons with Fred Sturm and, at MTSU, with Jamey Simmons.
Garcia's credits include the album “Yo Por Ti,” Grammy Award winner of Merengue Album of the Year 2001, by Puerto Rican artist Olga Tañon; musical director/keyboardist for one of the most important Latin bands of the ‘90s, Los Ilegales, in their ’97-’98 tour; keyboardist for the gospel group of multi-Grammy winner Juan Luis Guerra; and guest performer with the Dominican Republic’s National Symphony Orchestra, among others.
In 2001, after more than twelve years of private teaching experience in guitar, music reading and harmony, he joined the faculty of the Santo Domingo Conservatory of Music, as the jazz harmony teacher, position he held for four years until he and his family moved to the United States to continue his education.
In 2003, one of Garcia's compositions, “Eclipse MM,” written for full symphony orchestra, was among the winners in the classical field at the National Composition Contest organized by Casa de Teatro in Santo Domingo.
At Luther College, he was commissioned to arrange the “Celebration Iowa 2005-Weather Set” for high school big band, which is one of the most important high school jazz projects in the area, and it was broadcast twice, by popular demand, on Iowa Public Television.
While in Tennessee, Garcia's music has been performed and recorded by the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, the premium jazz orchestra in Nashville, comprised by the best studio and jazz musicians in the area; MTSU’s Jazz Ensembles I and II, and several small ensembles from the greater Nashville area.
Garcia's first first solo album, entitled “Sueños” (“Dreams”) was recorded in 2004, a fusion of rock, jazz, and Latin styles that includes astounding performances by an all-star group of Dominican musicians. It is available on CD Baby, I-Tunes, Napster, and Rhapsody.
