HONORS CHORUS
& WOMEN'S HONORS CHORUS

Dear High School Vocal Director:

You are cordially invited to participate in the 2009 Honors Chorus Festival. Due to the increasing size of the MTSU Honors Chorus, we encourage you to submit your registration materials early. We’re looking forward to singing with you!

 How to Participate

To the choral teacher: please recommend a quartet of your best students. They need not be chosen by competitive audition. If your program has two or more choirs, you are eligible to send a double quartet, but not more than 20 singers per school unless by special arrangement. Please call Dr. Bundage at (615) 898-2694 if you have any questions regarding your school’s participation. (NOTE: Black folders will be provided. Have students bring pencils. Attire for concert: Women - Dress with a sleeve or an ankle-length dark skirt with a dark top of similar or complementary fabric. Men - White tux shirt or white long-sleeve, button-down shirt with black bow tie, black tux pants or black dress slacks, black dress shoes and black socks. Please, no jackets and no tennis shoes.

Criteria for Selecting Members

Members need not be chosen by competitive audition, but they should be

(1) competent musicians with advanced music-reading abilities;

(2) good representatives for you and your school;

(3) able to attend all rehearsals;

(4) in grades 9-12 and enrolled in your choral program.

 

Raphael Bundage, Director - Mixed Chorus

Raphael Bundage is director of choral activities at Middle Tennessee State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University and graduate degrees from the Eastman School of Music. Prior to his graduate study, he was a supervisor of choral music in the Texas Public School System, and while at Eastman, he was director of the Eastman Chamber Chorus and the assistant director of the Eastman- Rochester Symphony Chorus, Donald Neuen, conductor. He has had extensive experience as clini­cian and adjudicator in the choral field and as a teacher of conducting. He is himself the product of an extraordinary host of master teachers including Alfred Mann, Julius Herford, and Robert Shaw.

 

Jamila McWhirter, Director - Women’s Chorale

Jamila McWhirter currently teaches secondary choral education methods and directs the Women’s Chorus at MTSU. Prior to MTSU, she served as adjunct faculty for Central Missouri State University, Missouri Baptist University, and Stephens College. She also taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia as a graduate teaching assistant. She has served many years as a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and con­ference presenter. Her choirs and voice students have been selected for ACDA and MENC performances on the district, state, and national levels,
