11:30 - 12:00 Registration in James Union Building (JUB) Lobby
12:00 - 12:15 Are you Going to Eat That? Dining for the Professional Environment
Dr. Meredith Anne S. Higgs, MTSU — Often meals are an integral part of the employment process. From initial hiring to prospective client meals to awards luncheons, dining is not only a part of daily life but also of professional life. This short presentation will provide you with basic dining etiquette to address some of these professional challenges.
12:15 - 1:45
Keynote
Luncheon — Hazlewood Dining Room
It’s easy to get lost on your way to a career if you don’t take advantage of all the tools available to you. Many adults believe they are hard at work looking for a job when they religiously scan the Sunday classifieds. Unfortunately, what they are doing is expending 100% of their effort on only 25% of the possibilities.
Technology is growing everyday and the windows it can open are limitless. To find the best career path, you need to use technology wisely when planning your career to meet your individual goals. Whether you are a seasoned professional or fresh out of college, your next career move could be only a click away.
Dr. Raylean Henry, Executive Director of Operations for the Regents Online Campus Collaborative
(ROCC) for the Tennessee Board of Regents, will introduce the conference participants to the varied new technology tools available to students as they search for jobs and enter a new career field.
2:00 - 3:00 — LRC Lab 101 A
Technology in Career Development — Karen Austin, Associate Director, Career Development Center, MTSU
More than a current trend for Career Development Centers is the demand by students to provide
virtually all career services – “virtually.” Online assessment tools such as FOCUS, Discover and SIGI are intended to be self-directed but still need to be supported by the Center staff; the plethora of exploration and job search engines can be great resources but overwhelming and misunderstood if not used appropriately. This session is designed to provide an overview of current eCareer tools available to students and alumni including mock interview, portfolio, resume writers, and assessments software as well as job sourcing databases.
3:15 - 4:15 — JUB Dining Room C
Gaining Job Experience Outside the Classroom—Experiential Learning and Service Learning Opportunities - An easy sell to employers — Bill Fletcher, Director, Career Development Center, and Deana Raffo, Asst. Professor, Speech & Theatre, MTSU
This presentation will show both students and professionals
how internships, cooperative education, practicums, and service learning opportunities can help students know more about their chosen career field and to gain experience to put themselves ahead on the job market.
4:30 - 5:30 — Hazlewood Dining Room
Prepare to Be Successful — Cele Curtis, Counselor/Coordinator, Adult Services, Cleveland State Community College
How do you prepare to be the selected candidate to be interviewed for your long awaited dream job? What do you need to do? How do you find out information about the company or organization?
What about dressing appropriately? What are the unspoken messages that take place at the beginning, middle, and end of an interview? What questions are the smart ones to ask? Attend this presentation for information that you can take with you when you have that all important interview.

Lifelong Career Management for all Tennesseans — Callie Wise, Trainer for the TCIDS (Tennessee Career Information Delivery System) program for the Regents Online Campus Collaborative
Many Tennesseans are unaware of all of the free resources available to help them make career decisions, and many of us are under the impression that once a decision is made, the door is closed to other options. Fortunately, the State of Tennessee, in collaboration with the Department of Education, has a set of websites free and available to any Tennessean, regardless of age, to assist them in their career choices. This session will provide information on how adults in our state can utilize these sites to assist them in their career planning
and job search process.
10:30
- 11:30 Concluding Brunch — Hazlewood Dining Room
Dr. Raylean Henry will help you review the lessons of the conference and to generate plans to reach your career goals at the conclusion of this delicious brunch. We plan this session so that you will have sustenance for the journey back home and food for thought about how you can share these ideas with other nontraditonal students when you get there!
