HOW TO APPLY FOR OWLS SCHOLARSHIPS
Instructions
to apply for OWLs Scholarships
You can now apply online for the 4 types of scholarships administered
through the Older Wiser Learners (OWLs) student organization
with the ScholarX program.
Here
are the steps you will need to follow to apply for a scholarship:
-
Read the information about the 2 types of OWLs Scholarships.
You can ONLY apply for 1 of the OWLs Scholarships. If you
cumulative GPA is 2.5 – 2.99, you are ONLY eligible
for the OWLs Challenge Scholarship. If your GPA is 3.0 or
higher, then you are ONLY eligible for the OWLs Academic Service
Scholarship.
-
If you are a female and at the senior level, you can apply
for the Jane Nickell Taylor Scholarship.
-
If you are a senior majoring in elementary education, you
can apply for the Joan Nickell Bailey Scholarship.
-
Marcus Nickell funded these scholarships in honor of his daughters
who returned to college as adults. He wanted
to help other adult learners going through a life change or
majoring in elementary education.
-
Check one or more boxes at the bottom of the application to indicate
the scholarship(s) for which you wish to apply. If you happen
to be a senior female majoring in elementary ed with a 3.0
GPA or higher, you could apply for the two “Nickell”
scholarships and the OWLs Academic Service Scholarship, for
example. Otherwise, there may only be one of these scholarships
for which you are eligible.
-
Complete the questions on the application that ask about your
children, your employment history, and asks you to indicate
that you are an OWLs member. If you have not paid your OWLs dues,
you will not be considered for these scholarships. They were
set up for members in our adult learners’ student organization. Check with the Off-Campus Student Services Office at 615-898-5989 to make sure your Owls dues are current.
You will need to fill out the online application for membership and submit your $20 check for dues to Off-Campus Student Services, MTSU Box 646, or bring to the office in KUC 320 before the scholarship application deadline date to be considered for these scholarships.
-
Then, write the 1,000 character essay to describe the extenuating
circumstances that will help the Committee to determine your
need for the scholarship. You might want to first write it
in a Word document where you can count the characters with
the Word Count tool under the Tools menu. Then you can copy
the essay when you have finished and paste it into your application
form.
-
If you are applying for the Jane Nickell Taylor Scholarship,
also submit a second paragraph about a recently experienced
life change in the same manner.
-
When you
are completely finished, click on the Submit Application button. You will see your responses, and you may print that page for your records.
