Featured Resource: The Owl at Purdue
In keeping with this issue's focus on teaching, I'd like to introduce you to the Owl at Purdue. Many colleges and universities have on-campus writing centers to help students with their writing and research skills, and many of these centers maintain web sites. However, few are as comprehensive as the Owl at Purdue. Put together by the Departmennt of English and the campus Writing Lab, the Owl offers a comprehensive set of documents to help students with all phases of their writing. Resources include information on common grammatical mistakes, the steps of the research process, and proper citation for the social sciences. I have taken to simply referring students to the appropriate documents on this site rather than writing the same thing ("don't use the passive voice!") on multiple papers. These are great resources!
