L19: Fluid Statics

Our discussion of the kinematics and dynamics of particles has thus far been confined to solid objects — objects whose shape does not change as they experience forces or move. That is about to change. The study of fluid statics is a study of fluids (and gasses) at rest.  We shall be introduced to a few basic definitions that are convenient to use when discussing fluids, and shall then discuss forces that are present when an object is immersed in a fluid. This will involve the application of some very basic FBD’s and Newton’s 2nd law.  The following lecture will then discuss the case of fluids in motion.
