Example 20.3

An airplane travels with a constant horizontal velocity in a region where the density of air is 1.00 kg/m3.  Each of the two wings of the plane has an area of 25 m2.  If the speed of the air under the lower wing surface is 47 m/s, and that over the upper wing surface is 68 m/s, estimate the weight of the plane in pounds.   (Assume that all of the weight is supported by the lift force provided by the wings.)

Answer:  14,000 lbs (7 tons)
