Tomorrow and Thursday an electric tram will circulate the campus, an indication that MTSU is seriously shopping to address the future needs of a growing population, while exploring alternative-fuel transportation. "We would like for the campus to be viewed as a lab where students can see why we should strive for more energy efficiency and a more positive environmental impact," notes Dr. Kathy Mathis, engineering technology. MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee, students and others will be on the front steps of the Cope Administration Building at 10 a.m. tomorrow to "kick the tires" and take a ride. Media welcomed to hop aboard! Contact Tom Tozer, News and Public Affairs, at 615-898-2919. What were the results of a recent textbook review project when science books, considered for approval by the Tennessee Department of Education, were read for technical accuracy? Dr. David J. Wilson, senior research fellow with Nashville's Brown and Caldwell, will share some surprising findings at 11 a.m. Jan. 16 in MTSU's Davis Science Building, Room 100. "High frequencies of substantive errors of scientific fact in many of the books were found," Wilson says. "These errors must be a source of confusion and frustration to students and teachers alike." Open to teachers, principals, school officials, the publicÑand media most welcomed. Contact Wilson at djwilson@brwncald.com, Dr. Cindi Smith-Walters, professor of biology, at 615-898-5449 or Dr. Martin Stewart, associate professor, chemistry, at 615-898-2073. When the Bakke case was decided in 1978, people literally lined up outside the Supreme Court the day before to get a seat at the historical argument, says Dr. John Vile, constitutional expert. "I think that issue is likely to be the most important that the Supreme Court decides this session. The decision dealing with the sodomy conviction in California will also give the Court the chance, if it chooses to take it, to clarify existing rulings that appear somewhat contradictory." Vile is completing a two-volume set of books on "Great American Judges" that contains biographies of lower-court judges, several of whom could be possible Rehnquist replacements, should the Chief Justice step down this year.
