'Brushing Off Memories'

First- and sixth-graders will welcome guests--including alumni from several decades--at 10 a.m. Feb. 4 for the kickoff of a yearlong celebration of the Homer Pittard Campus School's 75th anniversary. "The whole basis of the project is one's hometown connection and appreciating where you come from ... its historical significance ... and memories," says Cindy Cliche, first-grade teacher. The event will be videotaped as part of a larger oral history project, a collaboration between the children and MTSU Honors college students. Campus School alumni from the 50s, 60s and 80s will share memories and meet the children. Campus School, located at 923 E. Lytle St. in Murfreesboro, is a laboratory school at MTSU. "It's amazing how many memories this building brings to mind," adds Dr. Stan Baskin, principal. Media welcomed.

Contact Cliche and Baskin at 615-895-1030; for information about the "Hometown Connection" oral history project, contact Dr. Ron Kates at 615-898-2595.

Reporters on the 'front lines'

When Dr. Larry Burriss, journalism professor, was a lieutenant colonel in Air Force public affairs, he dealt with reporters at the 'front lines' of relief missions in Somalia and Bosnia. "I have to say we were able to work out arrangements that were beneficial to both reporters and the military. It can be done, but both sides have to be aware of, and appreciate, the needs of the military and the press." Reporters should be allowed at the battle scene, assuming they know the risks--and their presence will insure that reports are not skewed, he adds.

Hey, klutz!

Dr. Mark Anshel, sports psychologist, says that child psychologists agree that both praise and criticism are normal parts of healthy development--"as long as the message addresses the child's behavior, not his or her character or personality." The message should be, "Nice job of keeping your eye on the ball," rather than "You're great!" Or "You're having trouble--let's practice next week," not "That was a dumb mistake!"
