War against unbridled hate

If we had stood up to Hitler in the 1930s, many people would have been saved, and the Holocaust as we know it might not have happened, says Dr. Kevin Breault, professor of sociology and anthropology, who has researched the sociology of religion, cults and sects. Speaking of a possible war with Iraq, he notes, "We go to war in defense of a principled and defining idea--what is good, what is morally right, to protect people, many of whom cannot defend themselves from the actions of unbridled hatemongers. ... This is not the time for well-meaning Neville Chamberlains living in the comfort of a safe, democratic society far from immediate threats."

State champs

MTSU debaters captured both the varsity and novice state titles at the Tennessee Intercollegiate Debate Association tournament last Saturday at TTU. Sophomores Courtney Carver of Murfreesboro and Allan Lutes of Chattanooga were undefeated. "They won every debate," noted Dr. Russell Church, chair, speech and theatre. "It's unusual for a team to win every single match." Juniors Heather Cannon of Kingston and Erika Chambers of Gallatin won the novice division. "Each team member ... earned recognition," added Greg Simerly, head debate coach. The teams head to Athens, Ga., Feb. 14-16 for the Bulldog Invitational.

An on-line relationship

Lynn Palmer, director of admissions, says that as universities utilize greater means of electronic communication, it's a good idea for college applicants to develop an on-line relationship with the college's admission office. Students should make sure the school application is on a secure server. "This should ease concerns of sending personal information into cyberspace. ... [And] this will begin to prepare them for the type of on-line activities that they will experience in the classroom," she notes.
