They hope to raise $50,000 this year and a large part of it this Friday evening from 10 p.m. to midnight. MTSU was the second university in the nation to participate in "Up 'til Dawn," a fund-raiser to support the St. Jude Children's Research Center. In the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, MTSU students raised $90,000. This year they're going all out with sporting events, games, dancing, live entertainment, karaoke and free food, all to be held in the campus Recreation Center. Also attending will be patients from St. Jude who will offer remarks. The public is invited--and media are urged to attend. Dr. Amy Staples, assistant professor, history, and expert on the U.N., agrees that without a U.N. Security Council resolution or NATO support for a war, that stability will be shaken. "If the U.S. refuses to abide by U.N. rulings, it will ... reinforce the belief held by most of the world that the U.N. is run by the U.S." Not only will this undermine the U.N.'s important work, she adds, but the U.S. will further isolate itself from the international community. "The goal of the MTSU Powwow is not to generate profit but rather to establish a self-supporting annual scholarship fund raiser," says Dr. Kevin Smith, faculty adviser for the Native American Studies program at MTSU. The American Indian Festival is designed to help provide a positive celebration of native cultural heritage and support Native American students in their quest for a college education. Costumes, dances, music and drumming, skill demonstrations, arts and crafts--all will be part of a dazzling celebration this Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday, March 2, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., MTSU Livestock Center; $6 for adults; $3 for children. Sunday will be recognition day for all veterans and service people. Media most welcomed. For comment, contact Smith at 615-898-5958 and visit http://www.mtsu.edu/~powwow. |
