Just plain stealing

Stealing intellectual property such as songs is the same kind of immoral behavior as stealing a loaf of bread, contends Dr. Rich Barnet, professor, recording industry. But the punishment is likely to be more severe if the offender is caught. "The Recording Industry Association of America might catch you or they might not. We can each make a moral choice to steal or not to steal. I recommend, however, that you have a good attorney familiar with copyright infringement just in case. From an economic standpoint, the cost of some CDs is far less than legal fees and damages." The major labels, through the RIAA, have declared war, he adds.

Got milk (shakes)?

The Southeast Dairy Council is working hard to promote the sale of milk products in school, and, in fact, schools can apply for $2,000 grants from the council for help in purchasing a milk vending machine, says Dr. Janet Colson, associate professor, human sciences, and nutritionist. The milk products taste just like a milkshake, and while they do have more calories, they offer calcium, protein and vitamins, she notes. "From a dietitian's standpoint the flavored milks are far superior to soft drinks that just provide sugar and flavorings. ... Keep in mind that school-age children and teens who are active can handle the extra calories."

Rescuing kids

Since June 2, a group of at-risk youngsters, ages 10 to 16, have participated in sports and education-enrichment activities on the MTSU campus, sponsored by the HPERS department and the National Youth Sports Program. The young people have played basketball, golf, soccer, volleyball, participated in gymnastics and gone swimming. They also have discussed alcohol and drug, self-care, nutrition and career-enhancement issues. The program ends this Thursday, July 3. How have their lives changed? Media welcomed.
