University Space Issues

All space is considered University space, but may be assigned to a college, department, or unit for their primary use. The President has appointed a Space Advisory Group to make recommendations for university space.

CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT CAMPUS SPACE

The next Space Allocation Group meeting will be scheduled for Spring 2008. All available renovated space in Ezell has been allocated to RIM, Liberal Arts, and the University Writing Center. The Liberal Arts Dean's office will be moving to Todd, and the vacated offices will be used by Liberal Arts faculty. The academic deans continue to discuss the movement of departments within college domains. Planning is ongoing for the new student union, science and education buildings.

PROCEDURES

Process to request space, changes in function or capacity of space

All campus requests for space, or changes in function or capacity of space, should be directed to the Dr. Watson Harris, Chair, Space Advisory Group. For University space, the Space Advisory Group will review the request and make a recommendation to the President and Vice Presidents. For space within Academic Affairs, Academic Affairs has adopted a domain concept. Please direct your request to the department chair first, then to the Dean of your college, and then to Academic Affairs.

Requests to increase capacity should be sent for an evaluation to Facilities and Campus Planning to determine if an increase is feasible. The two departments work together to identify the origination of the current seating capacity, and to review square footage, classroom layout, and furniture choices to determine if an increase would be within codes (ADA and fire). After discussion with the Academic Affairs office, the decision to implement or reject the request is sent to all parties.

Process to request function change of academic space

Please send an email request to the Dean of your college or department, and copy the email to Dr. Watson Harris, wharris@mtsu.edu, or make a request through the above form. The Academic Affairs Office has final review on all function change requests of academic space.
