UNDERSTANDING THE NEED FOR SOFT SKILLS IN
THE WORKPLACE
Dr.
Charles Perry, MTSU Russell Chair of Manufacturing Excellence
A retired IBM executive, Perry is known as a technical leader and
mentor in paradigm-shift problem solving. While at IBM, he was
granted 33 U.S. Patents in materials and processes used in computer
hardware manufacturing, and also received six major awards in his 28
year career. In his presentation, “Understanding the Need for Soft
Skills in the Workplace,” Dr. Perry will discuss the necessity of
interacting positively with others and how this can be up to 70% of
professional success. Emotional Intelligence (EQ) or Soft Skills
such as communication, conflict resolution, flexibility,
mentoring/coaching, teamwork, etc. are being recognized as just as
important, if not more so, than IQ. Of the three key attributes (IQ,
personality type, EQ) that a person brings to the task, only EQ can
be significantly improved with training. This presentation will deal
with defining EQ, and giving examples of how to improve Soft Skills
in the workplace. |
