Distinguished Creative Activity Award

Each year the faculty members at Middle Tennessee State University nominate their peers for the Distinguished Creative Activity Award. This award recognizes creative achievement defined as “original, imaginative works of artistic merit as distinguished from empirical/analytical works of scholarly research.” This award also carries a monetary honorarium from the Middle Tennessee State University Foundation.

Creative Activity NOMINATION FORM

GUIDELINES FOR MTSU DISTINGUISHED CREATIVE ACTIVITY AWARD:


I. SCOPE: For the purpose of this award, creative achievement is defined as original, imaginative works of artistic merit as distinguished from empirical/analytical works of scholarly research.


II. ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for the award, the activity should meet the two following
criteria:
A. Originality: The work should be an original product or performance of artistic
inventiveness.
B. Recognition: The work must be recognized as a significant artistic contribution.


III. REQUIREMENT: The creative activity must have been performed while an
employee of MTSU and either worked upon or completed within the last five years.


IV. NOMINATION PROCEDURES:
A. All nominations should be delivered to the Ingram Building, Room 123A, or mailed to Peggy Duszynski at MTSU Box 42., and should be received by February 10, 2009.

B. All full-time, non-temporary faculty members, except those who have been
recipients within the previous five years (see below list), are eligible for nomination.
No one is eligible for more than one Foundation Award in any given year. Previous
recipients of the MTSU Distinguished Creative Activity Award are:


2003-2004 – Dr. Gaylord Brewer (English)
2004-2005 – Dr. James R. Simmons (Music)
2005-2006 – (no recipient)
2006-2007 – Dr. Mary Nichols (Electronic Media Communication) and Dr. Daniel Pfeifer (Recording Industry) – Joint Award
2007- 2008 – Dr. Kim Nofsinger (Speech and Theater)


C. Nominations must be submitted by two faculty members within the discipline or
closely allied fields. A faculty member may recommend no more than one
nominee.


D. With reference to the stated criteria and in consultation with members of the
academic discipline, the following materials are requested for consideration: VITA,
plus no more than three representative pieces of work and no more than two
references (e-mail address of references must be included). The materials
presented will be reviewed by the Faculty Research & Creative Activity Committee,
which will select the finalists.


E. The finalists will be further evaluated by the Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Committee and an ex-officio member of the MTSU Foundation. In addition to a
review of materials used in the initial screening, the evaluation may include a
personal interview and any additional information the committee may deem
appropriate. The Distinguished Creative Activity Award recipient will be announced
at the Annual Fall Faculty Meeting.

GUIDELINES FOR MTSU DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARD:

I. SCOPE: For the purpose of this award, research includes original creative scholarly activity, which generates new knowledge, product or application. This definition includes empirical studies, analytical literature searches which result in substantial modification of existing explanations of events, and/or creation of scholarly works of expression or appreciation. This award is not designed to recognize a single major breakthrough, but generally represents the combined results of a systematic research program.


II. ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for the award, the research should meet at least two of the following criteria:


A. Originality: The research should generate new knowledge, new creative expression, or substantially reorganize and reinterpret existing knowledge.


B. Advancement: The research should foster the development of theory and
explanations of topics or directly contribute to the understanding and solution of
important problems.


C. Recognition: The research must be recognized as a significant contribution to the
academic discipline.


III. REQUIREMENT:
The research must have been performed while an employee of
MTSU and either worked upon or completed within the last five years.
