Eligibility for Awards

All full- time tenured and tenure track MTSU faculty who hold the rank of Assistant Professor or higher are eligible for these awards together with all full-time twelve month MTSU library faculty.

All other considerations being equal, the committee will give preference to: untenured faculty; new activity versus continuing activity; faculty members who have not received an award for two years or more; faculty members who have been granted an award previously and completed their activity and submitted a comprehensive report to the committee in a timely manner; those whose previous activity has been presented at Scholars Week when suited; those activities that have few alternatives for funding; and those whose FRCAC award is likely to lead to external funding.

Deadlines for Submissions

As a general rule, applications are reviewed three times during the academic year with these three corresonding deadlines occurring in the Fall semester, early Spring semester, and mid-Spring semester. Please note that if your proposal includes funding for Summer Salary, those proposals must be received on or before the first deadline.

Deadlines for 2009-2010

September 22, 2009 Funding for the Current Academic Year including Summer Salary for that year
January 19, 2010 Funding for the Current Academic Year
March 23, 2010 Funding for the Following Academic Year

Decision Making

Awards are made by the Office of Research based upon recommendations of the Faculty Research and Creative Activity Committee, a university committee nominated by the Faculty Senate and appointed by the President. FRCAC is comprised of representatives from each of the five instructional colleges. The committee members individually review proposals, and then meet to discuss them and decide on recommendations to the VP for Research, who will notify applicant within four to six weeks of the application deadline as to whether funding was awarded.

Finality of Decision

The decision of the VP for Research regarding the recommendation of the committee is final and not subject to appeal or rebuttal. Applicants who have been denied funding will be provided a written statement outlining the reasons why the award was denied. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review these comments and revise and resubmit the proposal in accordance with the suggestions made by the committee.

Award Procedures

After the applicant has been notified of the award, the Office of Research will create an account by which to manage the funds granted. The faculty member will be responsible for following all University procedures in connection with the proper and timely disbursement and accounting of such funds and the completion of the necessary paperwork. All funds must be expended by the last day of the project as identified in the project timeline submitted with the proposal. If additional time is necessary, the recipient of the award shall petition the Office of Research for additional time for the account to remain open, providing convincing justification. If the award recipient does not make the request or if the request for additional time is denied, the account will be closed and a notice to such effect shall be sent to the recipient.

Recipient Responsibility

Recipients must complete and submit a Final Report on the project and submit it to the VP for Research within four weeks of the end of the project as identified in the project timeline of the proposal. The Report should include a cover sheet and be two-to-five typewritten pages that will summarize the work performed, the final results of the work and how it corresponds to the description and aim of the project provided in the applicant's proposal. Sufficient information should be provided so that the recipient's work can be publicized. This report should be submitted even if research results in publication. Additionally, the recipient is strongly encouraged to present the results of the work at Middle Tennessee State University's Scholars Week that occurs in the Spring semester. Such presentation, if suited to such a venue, will positively affect the recipient's likelihood of receiving future awards. Recipients will be notified as to the details, dates, and requirements of Scholars Week.
