- The academic
year wrapped up with the MTSU Professional Sales Program students
and Sales Team members receiving well-deserved recognition at
the annual Jennings A. Jones College of Business Awards Banquet.
- Kelley
Hire,
Wes Marsh, and Chas Villanova
were recognized for their outstanding performance at the 2003
National Collegiate Sales Competition (see March 2003 news).
- Chase
Thompson,
Senior Account Executive with United Parcel Service and MTSU
alumnus, was recognized for his hard work and dedication to
the 2003 Sales Team in their preparation for the National
Collegiate Sales Competition.
- Shawn
Kelley and Kathy Ferrell of the
Murfreesboro office of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network
were also recognized for the agency’s generous donation
of $1,500 to the Sales Program and the MTSU Foundation.
- Erin
Hillstrom,
senior Marketing major and Sales Team member, was awarded
the $500 Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Scholarship
for 2003.

- Sales students
were treated to a Dale Carnegie seminar on the transition from
school to career. Many thanks to our generous sponsor, NationLink
Wireless, and its founder and president, Andy Bailey,
MTSU alumnus.
- Fifteen students
from MTSU’s chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon traveled to Cincinnati,
Ohio for the organization’s annual national convention.
Wes Marsh, senior Marketing major, took the first
place trophy in the National Speaker’s Competition. Jason
Strickland, senior Marketing major, took fifth place
out of 55 students competing in the Pro/Am Sellathon; he received
$250 and a trophy for his efforts. Congratulations to both!

- The fourth
annual Sales & Marketing Career Fair was held in the South
Lobby of the Business & Aerospace Building. Students visited
with recruiters from companies including Shaw Industries, Northwestern
Mutual Financial Network, United Parcel Service, Wells Fargo Financial,
Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Walgreen’s, NationLink Wireless,
AmSouth Bank, Fedex Ground, and Vector Marketing.

2003
- Students
on the MTSU Sales Team returned victorious from their journey
to Kennesaw State University in Georgia for the fifth annual National
Collegiate Sales Competition. Kelley Hire, senior
Mass Communications major and Marketing minor, captured second
place in the championship round and won $1,000 and a trophy. Kelley
and team-mate Wes Marsh, senior Marketing major,
placed fourth among 32 schools in the team competition. Go Blue!
- Cintas generously
donated seventeen golf shirts, complete with “MTSU Sales
Team” stitched on the chest, to the team members who will
attend the National Collegiate Sales Competition on March 27-29.
Many thanks to Vonda Hunter and the folks at
Cintas of Nashville for their generosity and loyal support of
the MTSU Professional Sales Program! The students wore the shirts
with pride and certainly made a bold team statement when they
arrived in Kennesaw.
- As preparation
intensified for the National Collegiate Sales Competition, MTSU
Sales Team members were fortunate to receive the guidance of several
MTSU alumni. Team practices were conducted several nights a week
during March. Dr. Kemp and the team were thrilled to have the
support of sales professionals Chase Thompson
(UPS), Rebecca Wilkins (Janssen Pharmaceuticals),
Scott Hancock (Chordant), and Jason Irvin
(Medifax).
February
2003
- Chase
Thompson, United Parcel Service Account Executive, spoke
to the MTSU Sales Team at their weekly meeting. Mr. Thompson donated
his time and expertise to introduce the team members to UPS which
will be used in the service category role plays at the National
Collegiate Sales Competition in March.

Consultant and Certified Trainer for ACT! Software, spoke to the
MTSU Sales Team at their weekly meeting. Mr. Thompson donated
his time and expertise to introduce the team members to the software
which will be used as one of the products sold in the role plays
at the National Collegiate Sales Competition in March.
November
2002
- Thanks to
the generosity and support of Paul Stuart and
ARAMARK’s campus dining services, the Advanced Selling students
were treated to a five-course meal as they learned the finer points
of professional dining etiquette. Dr. Katie Kemp
conducted the program for the two-hour dining experience; students
reported that they had never eaten so slowly.

March
2002
- The MTSU
Sales Team placed third in the team competition at the 2002 National
Collegiate Sales Competition at Baylor University. Laurie
Cook and Scott Hancock competed on behalf
of the MTSU team. Laurie Cook placed first in the service category
role playing as a sales representative for Fedex. Other team members
attending the event were Scott Smith and Jullie
Meyer along with team coaches, Dr. Scott Inks
and Dr. Katie Kemp.
April
2002
- The Cochran
Agency of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network hosted a weekend
retreat at Evins Mill in Smithville, Tennessee for members of
the MTSU Professional Sales Program. Students spent Friday night
in the rustic cabins on the grounds and were treated to fabulous
meals provided by the chef at Evins Mill. Saturday’s educational
program entitled “Developing Professionalism, Mental Toughness,
and a Positive Attitude” was conducted by Joey Davenport,
Recruiter and PR Specialist for the Northwestern Mutual, Dr.
Scott Inks and Dr. Katie Kemp. The culminating
event was a challenging hike down to the base of the waterfall
on the property; assistance was required from nearly all eighteen
students in attendance to get Dr. Kemp back up the “mountain.”

2001
- The MTSU
Sales Team placed fourth in the team competition at the 2001 National
Collegiate Sales Competition at Baylor University. Scott
Hancock and Rickey Bryant competed on
behalf of the team. Other members attending were Derek
Bryant and Laurie Cook along with team
coach, Dr. Scott Inks.

2000
- The MTSU
Sales Team swept the 2000 National Collegiate Sales Competition
at Baylor University winning top honors in both the individual
and team events. Rebecca Wilkins won first place
in the championship round for the top three individual competitors
and received a check for $1,500 and a trophy. Barb Kellgren
joined Rebecca in the winning effort for the team competition.
Team member Tiffany Douglas also attended the
competition along with Dr. Scott Inks.
