The MTSU Sales Team is an organization for students who take the
initiative to pursue sales knowledge and experience beyond the classroom.
The team’s activities provide students with opportunities
to network and hone personal selling skills while competing for
awards and scholarships.
The team holds
weekly meetings at which speakers share their experiences in a relatively
intimate environment compared to the classroom. Role plays are videotaped
and critiqued by faculty, sales professionals, and fellow team members.
Team members gain invaluable experience, and they have the opportunity
to network with sales professionals and students with similar goals
and interests in an informal atmosphere.
The Sales Team's
activities focus each year on preparation for the National Collegiate
Sales Competition (NCSC), an event originated by Dr. Terry Loe in
1999 and hosted by Kennesaw State University near Atlanta. Corporate
sponsors from approximately 25 companies act as buyers and judges
for the role-play competition. Among the past sponsors are companies
such as Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, ConAgra, Dell, Tom
James Company, Edward Jones, Novartis Animal Health, Belo Corporation,
Liberty Mutual, IBM.com, Elk Corporation, ADP, ARAMARK Uniform Services,
and UPS.
Two students
are invited to compete on behalf of their school's team in multiple
rounds of role play at the NCSC. Four students emerge from the double
elimination tournament, and they compete in a final role play for
the top individual prizes. Individual scores are combined to calculate
university team winners, and awards are presented at a banquet to
close out the weekend.
The MTSU Sales
Team takes great pride in the fact that they have placed among the
Top Ten in every NCSC event since it began in 1999. MTSU took first
prize in both the individual and team competition in 2000 and placed
second as a team in 2005. Very few other universities share such
a consistent track record at the NCSC.

MTSU
Sales Team Corporate Sponsors
MTSU Sales Team sponsors are invaluable to the team’s success.
In addition to the funds shared with participating universities
by the NCSC’s corporate sponsors, local sponsors are needed
to help cover team expenses. Donations which are extremely helpful
include travel money, team shirts, and the gift of sales professionals’
time and expertise during practice sessions.
By participating
as a corporate sponsor, recruiters have the opportunity to interact
and work with “the cream of the crop” in the MTSU Professional
Sales Program. Recruiters can learn a great deal more about a prospective
employee’s potential through observing them in this environment
rather than in a brief interview. Corporations also receive recognition
on campus and in MTSU press releases related to the event.
