My positive elementary school experience
By Demetriss Moore

In giving equal time for the grinches that have haunted my past
I have dusted the cobwebs off of my finger-painted memories
to reflect on the shinier parts.
There is the girl who rode on the merry-go-round as long as she could
Singing (singing?!?!?!?) well...okay...yelling as my hair got mussed.
She has waist-length flaxen hair and puffy cheeks.
She hasn't learned to tie her shoes...BUT she found the wonders of Velcro in 2nd grade.
She sits and listens to her kindergarten teacher read stories and sing songs.
She bravely stands tall in the face of 'tee-tee's' and 'tah-tah's'
as if to say, "3 months of piano shouldn't count for naught."
Only to be told to be quiet.
[THINK POSITIVE...]
She learns about life
She learns about death (all too well)
The girl tries to swim and nearly drowns
- did I mention she is headstrong?
She experiences nature
She learns the ways of the world
In the beginning of the story she is a wilting flower, tie a stake to grow straight.
In the end it is removed and her petals are stretched up toward the sun.
