Formatting Cells

 

  1. Sometimes you will have text that spills over into other cells

 

 

To format it right click on the cell (or go to Format Cell)

 

 

  1. Click on wrap text

 

 

  1. You should get the screen below:

 

From here you can adjust the column width to your preference.

 

There are other formatting options, such as bolding, font color and alignment.

 

Formatting numbers

 

Suppose you have in your gradebook the last 4 digits of the student's social security number.

 

Notice the screenshot of students and their ssn below.

 

 

Notice what happened to the highlighted mubers. Excel ignores the zeros preceding the number. There are several ways to rectify this. I will tell you 2 of them.

 

1. When entering a number with a zero (or zeros) as a leading digit, place a single quote before the first zero (e.g. '0002); the quote will not display in excel.

 

2. If you already have the data pasted in, an easier way would be to select the column, go to Fomat Cell and select Text. Then you may go and add the zeros.
