Project 3:  Quasi-Experiment:

This is a group project.  We will design a questionnaire to test a specific hypothesis.  We will then collect data, analyze the data, and write up individual research reports.  Materials relevant to Fall 2008 are listed below.

Telephone Interviews and Cell-Phone Owners

Background:

In our archival analyses of research by the The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press we found that very few cell-phone contacts were made.  In addition, we found that young adults (18-24, and 25-34) were under represented in the sample.  Are these two observations related?  Are the sample data suspect because they failed to get a representative sample of young adults?

Hypotheses
:
  1. Participants 18-25 are less likely to have a land line than participants 40+.
  2. Participants 18-25 are more likely to be democratic than the 40+ participants.
  3. Participants 18-25 are more likely to vote for the younger candidate.
  4. Higher income participants in the 18-25 group are more likely to have a land line.
  5. Participants in the 18-25 group who live with their family are more likely to have access to a land line.
  6. Participants in the 18-25 group are more likely to be registered to vote than the phone survey reveals.
Methods:
We developed a questionnaire in an attempt to test these hypotheses.  We have edited this questionnaire, and the final copy is linked below.  Please administer the questionaire and bring the completed forms with you on Wednesday Nov. 5.  Data from the questionnaire will be analyzed in class, and these analyses will be used in your writeup of Project 3.
