LECTURE FOR NOTE TAKING UNIT TEST
The next unit covers
Chapter 11 Principles of Research.
It will be different from other units in that we will actually go to the
library to learn how to use the databases. The unit consists of 5 homework
assignments and 1 assignment that will count as part of your test grade.
The total homework points
for this unit is 230 points and should help everyone improve his daily average.
LetŐs look each of these assignments:
Assignment #1 is a scavenger hunt through the library, library
databases and some tutorials to give you an overview of the library before you
begin the other assignments. (Building Basic Background!) Each of the items on
the scavenger hunt will be used in other assignments. Some of the items
necessitate your going to the library; however, many can be done on a computer
outside the library. You will down load this assignment and write or type on
your downloaded sheet.
Assignment # 2 deals with the process of research and practices
using databases to find books, periodical articles, newspaper articles and
reliable Internet sources about a topic you need to research. By the way, the
term periodical is used for
magazines or journals. For Assignment #2 you will use the textbook and record
your answers in the text.
Assignment #3 deals with using subject specific databases and
again is a downloaded worksheet.
Assignment #4 requires you to use a floor plan of the library to
familiarize yourself with the location of things in Walker Library.
Assignment #5 takes you back to textbook pages and deals with
some specific reference books that you will find useful in courses you will
take.
In addition you will go the micro text area of the library and
find the New York Times for the day (and year) you were born. You will fill in
a ŇBirthday SheetÓ with information you find in the paper. The Birthday Sheet
will count as 10 points on your test.
Instead of coming to the
classroom, we will meet class in the library. You should check in with your
instructor each class period at the back of the reference section in the
glassed in room 114d.
You may work ahead on the
assignments. When you have completed all 5 assignments and your instructor has graded them, you
will be excused from class until the day the class reviews for the test. So
that theoretically you could finish in two or three days and not come to the
library while others are working to complete the assignments. Again YOU MAY MISS CLASS ONLY IF ALL
ASSIGNMENTS ARE COMPLETE AND GRADED.
If you have not already
downloaded the library packet, you will need to do so before next class
meeting.
