Have the students go to the school library and read articles on archeological discoveries from around the world. Magazines such as National Geographic, Archaeology, Smithsonian, and Discovering Archeology all have articles that are non-technical and can be understood by students above 6th grade. Newspapers and many web sites have articles on archeological discoveries. It will be easier if the teacher is already familiar with the articles available in the library or brings in a selected group of articles for the students to read. For up to date articles on archeological and anthropological topics go to this web site  and this web site.

Have the students write a report on the article they read. It should include the following.

Title and author of article
Is the author the archeologist, or did someone else write the article.
Location and time period of the site or sites
What did the archeologists find in their excavations?
How was the site first discovered (if its in the article)?
What new information was found at the site/s?
Importance of the sites to history

Have a class discussion on the new information the students learned about archeology and history. Be sure to talk about what information might have been lost if the sites were not investigated or had been bulldozed for development. Also discuss how important it is for archeologists to report their findings in places such as National Geographic where the general public can read about it.
