LESSON PLANS

Furnishing the Downtown Streets

Objectives:

1.  To become aware of the various types and functions of street furniture and to see how street furniture affects the appearance and use of a street or neighborhood.

  1. The student will prepare a city budget to include the
purchase of street lights, benches, and traffic signals which the city needs.  Collect catalogs or surf the net for suppliers and prices.

Procedure:
1.  Take a field trip to the downtown business or historic district to determine what street furniture is already in place.
2.  Students will return to the classroom and discuss their findings.  Students will then determine from this discussion what furniture is needed.
3.  Students will then prepare a city budget with street furniture included as capital outlay items.
4.  Invite someone from the mayor's office or the Main Street/Downtown Merchant's  office to discuss how the city funds street furniture and who is responsible for replacement and maintenance.
