LESSON PLANS

Build-Renovate-Restore

Objectives:
1.  The learner will discover how buildings are changed over time from their original states by nature and man.
2.  The learner will "create," "renovate," and "restore" a building.
3.  The learner will develop a time line to show the origin of his/her building and the events which changed its appearance.

Procedure for objectives 1 and 2:
1.  Discuss with the class architectural features of a building (go to pictorial glossary for help).
2.  Create a "class building" using cardboard, paper, boxes, etc., taking the suggestions of students for features and why these particular features are being used. When completed, ask students to draw the building on paper. Keep for future reference.
3.  In small groups, allow each group to make changes to the class building or "renovations" observing the following guidelines:  changes may be made only by covering up existing features or by adding features.
4.  When all groups have "renovated" the class building, compare the present building with the original (as shown in students' drawings).

Evaluation Activity:
In small groups, create a building. Allow each student to renovate noting what year and why change was made on a time line. Rotate the buildings among groups. Each group will "strip" the building to its original state and make restorations to complete. Note restoration date on time line.
Students may also wish to describe "layers" removed when restoration occurs.
