LESSON PLANS

Construction Work!

Objective: The learner will construct a building using  various architectural elements.

Materials:
Shoe boxes/small boxes
Paper towel/toilet paper rolls
Construction paper and poster board
Exacto knives
Tape and/or glue.
Index cards

Time limit:  1-2 hours

Procedure:
1.  Students will be divided into small groups for cooperative learning.
2.  Architectural elements are grouped.  For example, windows, roofs, porches, and specific types are written on index cards or use the visual survey sheets and pictorial glossary.
3.  Students will choose one card from each aspect and together construct a building using the components they chose.

Example:  Rectangular plan, two-story, assymetrical house with a Palladian window in front and wrap around porch.

Evaluation:  Students will display buildings and identify each of their architectural components.

Activity Extension:  Students will take a field trip and look for the elements they used. If a field trip cannot be taken, slides, videos, or photographs can be shown for identification.
