Daguerreotype:  Shiny or mirror image     
                             "likeness" reversed image (writing will be           
                             backwards Surface unstable, easily marred.                 
                             1839-1856

Talbotype,           Inexpensive, purplish- 1841-1855
Calotype              brown paper  Easily reproduced
                              Fades easily


Ferrotype             Black surface of sheet- 1855-1874 Tintype
                              iron, metal, copper. Often mounted on tomb-
                              stones.  Especially popular during Civil War be             
                              cause they could be mailed easily

Ambrotype          Paper photograph Gold-toned image. Made with       
                              glass negatives and collodion.  Retouched from
                              1867 on Name of photographer.
                              (1848-1880)'s Carte de visite, Cabinet photo         
                              graph.

Celluloid              Made Eastman a leader c. 1887 on in the field
