The
Tennessee Center for Labor-Management Relations (TNCLMR) is funded
by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and is associated
with Middle Tennessee State University. The Center provides grievance
mediation services, assists in the formation of joint labor management
committees and delivers educational and consulting services to Tennessee
companies and unions. The TNCLMR facilitates two major conferences
each year that provide workshops on current issues and celebrate the
"best practices" of award-winning joint-labor management
initiatives. |

Nov 17- TN DOL&WFD Updates
Topics to be discussed will include:
Overview of the assorted divisons in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development, Programs offered within the Office of Workforce Development, Use of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds desginated to the Workforce Division, Employer services programs.
This is an opportunity to learn more about the resources offered to you through the Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
Dec 8- Fundamentals of Negotiating a Collective Bargaining Agreement
Collective bargaining in this era of global competitiveness and economic stress can be difficult for the most progressive labor-management relationships. This session will examine some of the reasons for the challenges faced by labor and management in this era, and fundamental tools for how to address these issues strategically.
Dec 15- Advanced Negotiating Skills
How to Deal with Difficult Issues in Tough Economic Times
This session will build upon the fundamentals set out in the previous week’s session, but also provide a more advanced analysis of specific challenges, such as health insurance issues, pensions, compensation, and outsourcing.
Jan 19 - Guide to Conducting Fact-Finding Investigations
When incidents arise in the workplace which can potentially lead to disciplinary action, both labor and management representatives must be adequately prepared to address those situations and take whatever action is necessary. Making the wrong decision based on erroneous facts can lead to disaster for both labor and management leaders. This session will provide those individuals with the tools necessary to conduct fact-finding investigations and make decisions which can be legally supported in the long run.
Feb 16 - Employment Law: Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation
U.S. Supreme Court Puts Discrimination Claims in the Grievance/Arbitration Process: The ABC's of Employment Discrimination
In April 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the parties to a collective bargaining agreement can include federal employment discrimination claims in the agreement, and that those claims are subject to arbitration. As such, the inclusion of the this type of language may become a subject of bargaining and also form the basis for grievances. Considering this potential, both labor and management representatives, particularly labor, need to have a basic understanding of federal and state discrimination law. This program will provide just that.
March 16 - Labor Law 101
From Representation to Negotiation
The primary role of the Tennessee Labor-Management Center is to foster collaborative relationships among labor and management. In order to be effective in that mission, both parties must have the knowledge base to engage the relationship on a level playing field. This seminar will provide labor and management leaders with the tools necessary to understand the basics of the National Labor Relations Act, from organizing to collective bargaining of the first contract.
April 20 - Labor Law 102
From Agreement to Arbitration
The primary role of the Tennessee Labor-Management Center is to foster collaborative relationships among labor and management. In order to be effective in that mission, both parties must have the knowledge base to engage the relationship on a level playing field. This seminar will provide labor and management leaders with the tools necessary to understand the basics of the National Labor Relations Act, from contract negotiation to day-to-day administration of the agreement between the parties.
May 18- Handling Disability in the Workforce
Labor and Management Compliance with "New" Americans with Disabilities Act
Disabilities in the workplace present special challenges to the parties’ administration of the collective bargaining agreement, whether the disability comes from a work-related or personal condition. These challenges have now reached a different dimension with the amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act, which greatly expanded the coverage of the law. This seminar will address those changes, and how labor and management leaders can productively and legally adapt.
June 15- The ABC's of Workers' Compensation for Stewards & Supervisors
Injuries in the workplace are an unfortunate occurrence, despite the best efforts of labor and management. The steps stewards and supervisors take at the outset can go a long way towards providing appropriate medical care and in preventing future accidents. This training will provide supervisors and stewards with the necessary skills on how to effectively deal with workers’ compensation injuries, from medical care to disability benefits.
