Eligibility
Criteria To
be eligible for this award, at the time of application the applicant must: -
Be an undergraduate, post baccalaureate, or a graduate student
enrolled in a teacher education program (leading to teacher certification) at
an accredited institution of higher education and have completed at least 12
undergraduate or graduate credit hours in that institution’s teacher
education program. -
Have an overall grade-point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. -
Be student teaching/interning full time in a curricular area for
which he or she is eligible for certification in a pre-K-12 classroom in an
accredited public or private school where he or she spends the majority of
the day in direct instructional contact with students. -
Be committed to teaching as a full-time career. -
Be nominated by his or her supervising teacher, university
supervisor, or director of field experiences. -
Adhere to the requirements as outlined in the application materials. The
packet must be received no later than May 16, and sent to: National Student Teacher of the Year Award Kappa

Guidelines for Application1. This application form must be completed following all of the guidelines. 2.
All responses must be reflect the applicant’s best writing skills, be
typed, double-spaced, and conform to the word limitations noted. Application materials must represent the
highest possible standards to be considered for final judging. 3.
Part IV must be completed by the applicant’s sponsor or by a
representative of the college or university and must not exceed the word
limitations noted. 4.
Each applicant must provide: -
1 original and 5 copies of the application, including parts I, II,
III, and IV -
1 official transcript -
4 copies of the official transcript -
5 copies of the written lesson plan -
1 recording of the lesson (video tape should be a standard
VHS tape or use a DVD) that includes an introduction, a lesson, and
reflection. Each
applicant must submit a packet that consists of five sets of materials. Each set should present the materials in
the following order: application form,
transcript, and written lesson plan.
The set with the original transcript and the original application will
be considered the original submission.
The other four sets are photocopies of the original. There should be no cover for the
materials. (A non-refundable $30
entry fee must accompany each applicant’s packet of materials.) Each
applicant should retain a copy of his or her tape and application materials
in case of loss or damage done during shipping. |

A videotaped (video tape should be a
standard VHS tape, no mini cassettes or CD’s) lesson showing the student
teacher/intern teaching a complete lesson cycle in 30 minutes with his or her
classroom must be submitted and should include the following elements: 1.
Video Introduction: Introduce yourself on tape, and provide a
brief description of your class-including the number of students and the
context of the lesson you will be teaching.
(Maximum time: 3 minutes) 2.
Lesson: The
lesson must consist of a continuous, unedited lesson (no breaks or pauses)
showing the student teacher/intern teaching in his or her classroom. (Maximum time: 30 minutes) 3.
Reflection:
The videotape should conclude with a reflective analysis where the
student teacher responds to the following questions: (1)What did the
students learn as a result of this lesson?
(2) What did you like most about the lesson? (3) What did you learn from this
lesson? (4) What changes, if any, would
you make if you were to reteach this lesson? (Maximum time: 5 minutes) 4.
Written Lesson Plan: Include with the videotape the written
lesson plan used for the videotaped lesson.
Please include a description of your class - males, females, special
needs students, and limited English proficiency students grouping pattern
used, if any, and also include a written reflection of the lesson taught.
The quality of the submitted videotape is the responsibility of the
applicant. |
