Mural Painting for Community Development

Tanya Tewell, MFA, Art Department
John Sanborn, MSW, Social Work Department

Description of the Project

Mural painting has been used over the years in many different areas to create expressions of community consciousness. Several of the websites below provide examples of murals developed for that purpose. The MTSU Mural Painting Project involves the use of community organization processes in the design and execution of murals by community members themselves rather than by professional artists. It is our idea that a mural which is planned and painted by a group working together provides the most effective representation of community. The process starts with community members sharing their ideas about living, working and playing together. It includes discussions and sketches of images which have meaning to the group. It moves through the development of a consensus about design to the painting itself, with everyone participating.

Please contact us if you have questions about this process. The links with our names above will take you to our home pages which include e-mail addresses. You may also contact us by mail at 163 David Sanborn Road, Liberty, Tennessee 37095.
